AHC fluid flush and bleed

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1 hour (owner report)COST About 2 cans of Toyota AHC fluid (part 08886-01805, $22/can in 2005) plus about $20 in supplies

Symptoms

A harsh or bouncy ride, dark or metallic-gray fluid in the reservoir, sluggish leveling, or a flush that's overdue (owners say Lexus recommends one every 60k miles).

The fix, step by step

  1. Following the IH8MUD how-to: park on level ground, select Low and switch off.
  2. Remove the old fluid from the reservoir with a turkey baster or fluid evacuator and refill with new AHC fluid.
  3. Fit clear tubing to the bleeder on the driver's front actuator, open it until that corner settles, close it, then start the truck and let it re-level.
  4. Repeat for the passenger front, driver rear and passenger rear, topping up as you go.
  5. Keep cycling until clean fluid comes out of every corner.
  6. Soak the rear bleeders in penetrating oil the day before, because they rust and round off.
