Clicking or no-crank conditions that come and go and get worse until it won't start.
The fix, step by step
- The 2UZ's starter lives in the engine's V, under the intake manifold.
- Disconnect the battery, then remove the intake plumbing and intake manifold, with rags stuffed in the ports so nothing drops into the engine.
- Unbolt the starter and either rebuild the contacts and plunger or fit a new or reman unit.
- Owners often do this at the timing-belt halfway point, when the water pump and thermostat housing are out, because access is better.
