Lexus GX 550 problems: 6 things to check

Lexus GX 550 problems to check before you buy
- Run the VIN for 25V-7672024 GX 550s built May 31, 2023 to April 10, 2024 may be in the engine debris recall (Lexus campaign 25LA07). Check lexus.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls, and get the dealer paperwork showing what was done.
- Listen to a cold startThe recall's listed symptoms are knocking, rough running, a no-start and a loss of power. Any knock from a V35A is a stop-and-ask-questions noise, not a negotiating point.
- Overtrail or not?If you want the rear locker, E-KDSS and 33s from the factory, it has to be an Overtrail or Overtrail+. Other grades have the locking center diff but no axle locker.
- Seats vs. capabilitySeven seats are listed only on the Premium and Luxury grades. Families that need a third row are buying a different GX from the overlanders.
- Tire upgradesTrucks already on bigger tires may have a top-shock spacer or adjusted control arms. Ask what was done to clear them, and check for rub marks on the liners at full lock.
- Aftermarket wiringLights, compressors and dual batteries are popular early mods. Look for tidy fusing and switch panels, not taps into factory harnesses.
The repairs Lexus GX 550 owners end up doing
| REPAIR | SYMPTOMS | DIFFICULTY | TIME | COST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine recall 25LA07 (25V-767) check | Possible engine knocking, rough running, a no-start or a loss of motive power. Many affected trucks show no symptoms. | 1 / 5 | ≈ 10 minutes to check. Dealer time varies. | Free under recall |
| Fitting 33–35 in tires | Not a fault. You want more sidewall and clearance than the factory tires provide. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 2–4 hours | Tires and parts |
| Oil and filter change on the V35A-FTS | The oil maintenance reminder is on, or it's been 10,000 miles or 12 months since the last change. Lexus's schedule cuts that to 5,000 miles or 6 months if you mostly drive dirt or dusty roads, make short trips below freezing, or idle a lot. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 1 hour | Oil, a filter and a drain-plug gasket |
| Cabin filter, engine air filters and wiper blades | Weak airflow from the vents, a musty smell, a dusty filter after trail miles, or wipers that streak. The 2024 Lexus schedule replaces both the engine air filter and the cabin air filter every 30,000 miles and inspects the wiper blades at every service. | 1 / 5 | ≈ 30 minutes | Filters and blades |
| Front brake squeal and pad checks | A squeal from the front brakes when driving forward or in reverse. Lexus bulletin L-SB-0036-24 covers it on some 2024 GX 550s. Owners of the twin LC250 on LandCruiserForum mostly hear it first thing in the morning, or when it's cold and humid. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 15 minutes to inspect · 1–2 hours for front pads | Covered under warranty if the bulletin applies; otherwise pads, hardware and fluid |
| Tire rotation, wheel swaps and TPMS registration | It's 5,000 miles since the last rotation. Or the tire positions are wrong on the display after a rotation, or you're fitting a second set of wheels. If the sensor IDs aren't registered, the manual says the TPMS light blinks for a minute after about 20 minutes of driving and then stays on. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 1 hour, plus a 10–30 minute drive | Free if you do it; new sensors for a second wheel set |
| 12V battery: test, jump-start or replace | Slow cranking or a no-start, the smart access system not unlocking the doors, or a red or clear eye in the battery indicator (on trucks that have one). Blue means good, clear means it needs charging, and red means replace. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 45 minutes to replace | A battery, or nothing for a test |
| Clear the camera, cluster and label recalls | The rearview camera freezes or goes blank in reverse on trucks with Panoramic View Monitor (25V-744, 2024–2025). The instrument cluster may not show some warnings or indicators (26V-341, 2024). The load-carrying-capacity modification label may show the wrong values (26V-179, 2024–2025). | 1 / 5 | ≈ 10 minutes to check. Dealer or over-the-air update. | Free under recall |
