Symptoms
The oil maintenance reminder is on, or it's been 10,000 miles or 12 months since the last change. Lexus's schedule cuts that to 5,000 miles or 6 months if you mostly drive dirt or dusty roads, make short trips below freezing, or idle a lot.
The fix, step by step
- Lexus's GX 550 owner's manual calls for ILSAC GF-6A SAE 0W-20.
- You can use 5W-20 in a pinch, but the manual says to go back to 0W-20 at the next change.
- It lists 7.7 qt with the filter and 7.4 qt without.
- The filter and drain plug are underneath.
- On the LC250, which shares the GA-F body but not the engine, owners on IH8MUD's oil-change thread say only the front skid plate has to come off.
- Several found the factory filter fitted very tightly, so have a cap-style wrench ready.
- AMSOIL's GX 550 lookup gives 30 ft-lb for the drain plug with a new gasket.
- Refill, warm the engine, shut it off, wait about five minutes and read the dipstick, as the manual describes.
- Then reset the oil maintenance reminder, which the manual lists among the items to initialize.
Tools & part numbers
- Cap-style filter wrench
- drain pan
- torque wrench
- tools for the front skid plate
- a funnel that reaches into the filler neck (an LC250 owner found a standard funnel won't stay upright)
- new drain-plug gasket. An LX 600 owner on the same thread, whose truck has the same V35A, uses Toyota filter 90915-10010. Confirm the filter for your VIN with a Lexus parts counter.
