Tire rotation, wheel swaps and TPMS registration

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1 hour, plus a 10–30 minute driveCOST Free if you do it; new sensors for a second wheel set

Symptoms

It's 5,000 miles since the last rotation. Or the tire positions are wrong on the display after a rotation, or you're fitting a second set of wheels. If the sensor IDs aren't registered, the manual says the TPMS light blinks for a minute after about 20 minutes of driving and then stays on.

The fix, step by step

  1. The Lexus schedule rotates the tires every 5,000 miles.
  2. Torque the wheel nuts to 97 ft-lb and recheck them after 1,000 miles.
  3. After a rotation, register the wheel positions.
  4. Park for 15 minutes or more with the engine off, then start it and choose Vehicle customize > Tire pressure > Tire rotation > Continue on the center display.
  5. Drive at about 25 mph or faster, with occasional left and right turns, for 10–30 minutes.
  6. Reversing clears the data.
  7. New sensors use 'New tire registration' on the same menu, and the GX stores two sets of IDs ('Set 1' and 'Set 2'), so a winter or trail wheel set can be swapped in about two minutes once registered.
  8. If you change tire size or run different pressures, set the tires cold and then use 'Set current air pressure.' Lexus warns the system may not work properly on non-genuine wheels.
  9. Every wheel needs a sensor.
  10. The spare hangs under the rear on a chain, and the holding bracket is tightened to 34.7 ft-lb.
