Toyota Mega Cruiser problems: 7 things to check
The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Toyota Mega Cruiser, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.
Toyota Mega Cruiser problems to check before you buy
- Civilian or military?A BXD20V civilian wagon and an ex-JGSDF BXD10 soft-top are different trucks with different values. Ex-military trucks have arrived via third countries (one BaT truck was repainted in Dubai and titled as a 1990), so check the import paperwork and the chassis plate.
- Do the 4WS and tire deflation work?Several BaT trucks were sold with inoperative four-wheel steering or central tire inflation, or with parts such as the deflator hose missing. Check them, because these systems are part of what you're paying for.
- Underbody rustBaT sellers have noted rust on the underside, painted-over underbodies and rust repair before a repaint. Get under it with a light and a probe, especially around the hub-reduction housings and frame.
- 24-volt electricsThe truck runs a 24-volt electrical system. Budget for batteries in pairs, and make sure any added accessories are wired for 24 V.
- Parts supplyIbaraki Prefecture sold its Mega Cruiser partly because parts were hard to get. The 15B engine family was also used in Dyna light trucks, which helps with engine service items, but body and driveline parts are specialist. Find your source before you buy.
- Size and accessIt's 2,170 mm wide, 5,090 mm long and 2,075 mm tall, so measure your garage, check parking and trail widths, and remember the high sills that need the grab handles.
- Service records and import papersRecent BaT trucks with records listed axle-shaft, wheel-bearing, motor-mount, gasket and differential-fluid work. Receipts like these, plus clean import documents and a title, add real value.
The repairs Toyota Mega Cruiser owners end up doing
| REPAIR | SYMPTOMS | DIFFICULTY | TIME | COST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hub-reduction and differential gear oil | No records, weeping seals at the hub housings or diffs, or noise from the driveline. | 2 / 5 | Half a day | Gear oil plus your time |
| Rear axle shaft and wheel bearings | Clunks, play or noise at a corner. BaT trucks have had a left-rear axle shaft replaced and the wheel bearings serviced. | 3 / 5 | Most of a day | Parts plus labor |
| Engine and transmission mounts | Vibration or clunking on take-off. One BaT truck had both its motor mounts and front mounts replaced. | 2 / 5 | Half a day | Parts plus labor |
| Engine gaskets and leaks (15B-FT) | Oil seeping from the sump, valve cover or exhaust manifold. One BaT truck had the oil pan, valve cover and exhaust manifold gaskets replaced, plus a coolant reservoir hose. | 3 / 5 | A day | Parts plus labor |
| Fuel filter and batteries | Hard starting, or a truck that has been sitting. BaT trucks had fuel filters and batteries replaced after import. | 1 / 5 | 1–2 hours | Parts only |
| Inboard disc brake service | Grinding, a pull under braking, a soft pedal, or simply no records. All four brakes are ventilated discs mounted inboard, so they sit under the truck rather than behind the wheels, and they're easy to neglect. One BaT seller listed brake service among recent work. | 3 / 5 | ≈ A day for all four | Genuine pad kits about $80–84 and discs about $87 each at Nengun (October 2026), plus labor |
| Underbody rust treatment | Scale on the frame, suspension arms and hub-reduction housings. BaT sellers keep finding it: rust on the underside of several civilian trucks, visible rust on the underside components of a BXD10 soft-top, an underbody painted black over earlier rust, and one truck that needed rust repair before its repaint. | 2 / 5 | ≈ A weekend | Materials plus labor |
