Underbody rust treatment

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ A weekendCOST Materials plus labor

Symptoms

Scale on the frame, suspension arms and hub-reduction housings. BaT sellers keep finding it: rust on the underside of several civilian trucks, visible rust on the underside components of a BXD10 soft-top, an underbody painted black over earlier rust, and one truck that needed rust repair before its repaint.

The fix, step by step

  1. Wash the underside and let it dry.
  2. Probe the frame, suspension mounts and hub-reduction housings for scale and pitting, and get anything structural looked at before you coat it.
  3. Wire-brush loose rust back to firm metal, apply a rust converter, then prime.
  4. Spray cavity wax inside the frame rails and an underbody wax over the visible underside, keeping it off brake parts and exhaust.
  5. Recheck every year.
