Fluids, capacities & service intervals
Even a low-mileage 250 is worth baselining. Many owners change the factory oil early, and the diff and transfer fluids are rarely touched under the 'inspect only' schedule. Specs below are from Toyota's US 2024 Land Cruiser Owner's Manual (OM60U35U) and its Warranty & Maintenance Guide for the i-FORCE MAX hybrid (T24A-FTS).
| ITEM | SPEC / CAPACITY | INTERVAL | NOTES & PARTS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil & filter | ILSAC GF-6A SAE 0W-20 (5W-20 only as a stopgap) · 5.9 qt with filter | Then every 10,000 mi / 12 months; 5,000 mi for dusty or towing use (Toyota) | Remove the front skid plate. Check the level with the hybrid system off after about 5 minutes. Many owners do the first change early, at 1,000–1,500 mi.Oil filter 90915-10009 (owner-reported) · ToyotaPartsDeal ↗Oil drain plug gasket · RockAuto ↗ |
| Engine air filter | OE-type panel filter | Replace every 30,000 mi; inspect more often on dirt roads (Toyota) | Air filter · RockAuto ↗ |
| Cabin air filter | OE-type | Replace every 30,000 mi (Toyota) | Cabin air filter · RockAuto ↗ |
| Hybrid battery cooling intake filter | Vacuum-clean the filter behind the cargo-area side vents | Inspect every 5,000 mi, clean every 20,000 mi (Toyota) | The Owner's Manual walks through the cleaning. If the filter is damaged, have the dealer replace it. Keep cargo off the vents. |
| Spark plugs | NGK DILZKAR8E7H iridium · 0.028 in (0.7 mm) gap, do not adjust | Every 40,000 mi (Toyota) | That interval is short because the engine is turbocharged. Don't assume a V8-style 120k plug life.NGK DILZKAR8E7H (part search) · RockAuto ↗ |
| Coolant (engine, power control unit, intercooler) | Toyota Super Long Life Coolant or equivalent · engine 12.2 qt (14.3 qt with rear A/C), power control unit 2.5 qt | Intercooler coolant first at 150,000 mi, then every 50,000 mi; engine/inverter coolant is inspected (Toyota) | There are three separate cooling loops. Check each reservoir level.Coolant / antifreeze · RockAuto ↗Coolant reservoir cap · RockAuto ↗ |
| Automatic transmission (8-speed) | Toyota Genuine ATF WS · 13.2 qt reference capacity | Replace at 60,000 mi when towing or heavily loaded, or with lots of idling (Toyota); otherwise inspect | The manual warns that non-WS fluid can cause noise or damage. The level is checked by temperature (no dipstick), so most owners leave this to a dealer.ATF WS-type transmission fluid · RockAuto ↗ |
| Transfer case | Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear Oil LF, SAE 75W · 1.48 qt | Every 30,000 mi when driving on dirt or towing (Toyota); otherwise inspect | Dealers don't always stock LF. Owners have used Red Line MT-LV. Keep receipts for warranty.Gear oil · RockAuto ↗Red Line MT-LV 70W75W · Red Line Oil ↗ |
| Front & rear differentials | Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 · front 1.29 qt, rear 5.94 qt | Front every 15,000 mi and both at 30,000 mi when towing or heavily loaded (Toyota); otherwise inspect | The rear locker is standard in the US. Loosen the fill plug before you drain.Gear oil · RockAuto ↗ |
| Driveshaft grease points | Lithium chassis grease NLGI 2 on the spiders; moly-lithium or lithium NLGI 2 on the front slide yoke | Lubricate and re-torque the propeller-shaft bolts every 15,000 mi (Toyota) | Universal joints · RockAuto ↗ |
| Brake fluid | DOT 3 (SAE J1703) or DOT 4 (SAE J1704) | Inspect (Toyota); flush if the history is unknown | Brake fluid · RockAuto ↗ |
| 12 V battery | 12.0 V or higher open voltage (Toyota test: power off, high beams on for 30 s first) | Test at purchase | A weak 12 V battery stops the hybrid system going to Ready. See the repair above.12 V battery · RockAuto ↗ |
