Clear the hybrid-battery cooling intakes

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 15 minutesCOST Free; filters if replaced

Symptoms

A 'battery cooling fan maintenance' message, or a fan running louder than usual.

The fix, step by step

  1. Open the rear door and find the grille-like intakes low in the side trim on each side.
  2. Remove anything blocking them, such as bags, gear or dust, and keep cargo clear of them.
  3. If the warning keeps coming back on a low-mileage truck with clean vents, have the dealer scan it.
  4. One dealer cleared a reminder it believed had been set at 5,000 miles instead of 50,000 at the factory.
