Quiet a vibrating driver's mirror

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 30 minutesCOST A few dollars in thin plastic and felt

Symptoms

At highway speed the driver's mirror glass shakes enough to blur the view. Owners say the passenger side is solid. One NHTSA complainant says the dealer confirmed it and called it common to all Land Cruisers.

The fix, step by step

  1. Report it to the dealer first, while it's under warranty.
  2. On LandCruiserForum, dealers have tightened the mirror or replaced the whole assembly, sometimes twice, without curing it.
  3. Owners think the driver-side assembly simply has too much play, and their fix is a shim.
  4. One member cut a C-shaped piece of thin plastic lid with peel-and-stick felt on both faces and reported about a 90% reduction, with a little shake left on rough roads.
  5. Another used a roughly 1.6 mm Rubbermaid lid and says pivoting the mirror forward makes it easier to fit.
  6. A bare plastic shim rubbed the paint when the mirror folded, so use the felt.
