Engine oil and filter change

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 1 hourCOST Oil and filter only

Symptoms

Scheduled service. Many owners also change the factory oil early, at around 1,000–1,500 miles.

The fix, step by step

  1. Warm the engine, then remove the front skid plate.
  2. Owners call it easy, but check the bolts, since some threads have been damaged.
  3. Drain the oil, replace the filter, refit the drain plug with a new gasket, and fill with 0W-20.
  4. Owners on LandCruiserForum.com report a capacity of about 5.9 quarts.
  5. Confirm it against your owner's manual and check the dipstick before refitting the skid.
  6. A Fumoto-style drain valve with a hose makes later changes cleaner, though the pan won't drain completely either way.
