Sunroof leak and a damp headliner

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1 hour to clean the drains; a dealer visit if the seal is at faultCOST Free to clean; seal work under warranty

Symptoms

Water dripping through the overhead console with the roof shut, a damp headliner or passenger footwell, or a musty smell after rain. NHTSA complaints include a rear section of the sunroof that doesn't seal and a cabin that smells of mildew every time it rains.

The fix, step by step

  1. Open the roof and clean out the housing, especially the corners where the drains are.
  2. One LandCruiserForum owner found his corner drains plugged with leaves and plant matter, so water overflowed into the headliner.
  3. He cleared it with rags, a shop vac and compressed air.
  4. Keep the seals clean and the drains clear.
  5. If water still gets in once the drains are clear, it's a warranty job: UK owners report dealers removing the glass and fitting a new seal under Toyota's instructions, and one says his dealer found a TSB involving new sealant (no number was given).
  6. Some trucks needed more than one visit.
