Symptoms
Upper spring cups (and their studs) rusted through, because dirt and water collect in the cup on top of each coil.
The fix, step by step
- Set the parking brake and jack the center of the truck.
- Remove the wheel, then use the Pinzgauer's own jack under the hub to control the suspension.
- Remove the lower shock bolt and the limiting-strap bolt, lower the hub until the coil is extended, and fit the factory spring compressor arms, levering between body and coil for room.
- Jack the hub to compress the coil, fit the lower plates, tighten, lower and lift out the spring.
- Fit new cups, gasket and centering ring on the bench, then reverse the steps.
- The write-up, by Scott Ingham of Expedition Imports, recommends treating and painting the coil while it's out.
