Adjust the driveshaft parking brake

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME Several rounds of trial and errorCOST Adjustment is free. Disc with lining about $99 each (two per truck)

Symptoms

The handbrake won't hold the truck on a slope.

The fix, step by step

  1. This follows a Portal Hub write-up based on the manual.
  2. The handle should pull out 90–100 mm (about 4 inches) to engage, and the pin at the brake lever at the back must travel the same distance.
  3. Measure both.
  4. If they differ, take out the pin and adjust the cable length, then set the brake nut on the other side so the brake fully engages.
  5. The nut is sensitive, and 90 degrees can make a big difference, so expect several rounds.
  6. Test on a hill without using the clutch.
  7. Finally, pre-tension the cable with two or three clockwise twists, as seen from the front.
