Symptoms
A long pedal, uneven braking, or a wet backing plate from a weeping wheel cylinder.
The fix, step by step
- Raise one wheel at a time onto stands and remove the wheel.
- Refit two or three lug nuts to hold the drum square.
- Take out the adjusting plug in the drum with a 10 mm Allen key (it seals with a copper ring, like the fluid plugs) and check that at least 1/8 inch of lining is left.
- Each front has two star adjusters (duplex shoes) and each rear has one.
- Turn each adjuster until the shoe locks, then back it off until the drum turns freely; the SDP guide says about five clicks.
- Pump the pedal hard several times, and again while driving slowly, before you trust it.
