Symptoms
Squeal from the front of the engine, a vibrating belt, or a cracked or glazed belt.
The fix, step by step
- Note the belt routing before you start.
- Rotate the automatic tensioner to release the tension and remove the belt.
- Check the tensioner and idlers for noise and wobble, and replace the tensioner if it's weak.
- The belt drives the alternator, power steering pump and A/C compressor, so a failure can mean losing power steering and charging.
- Fit the new belt and release the tensioner slowly.
