Service the brakes (drums to 1970, front discs from 1971)

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ Half a dayCOST Parts plus brake fluid

Symptoms

A pull to one side, a low or spongy pedal, or seeping wheel cylinders. Also any truck that has sat for years.

The fix, step by step

  1. Inspect every hose and steel line, since old trucks rust their lines from the outside.
  2. On 1969–70 trucks rebuild or replace the wheel cylinders, fit new shoes and adjust the drums.
  3. On 1971–72 trucks fit new pads and inspect the calipers and rotors.
  4. Bleed with fresh fluid from the wheel farthest from the master cylinder inward.
  5. Stainless front hoses are worth fitting on a lifted truck.
