Replace worn locking hubs

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hoursCOST A pair of hubs

Symptoms

Hubs that won't engage, pop out in four-wheel drive, or let the front driveshaft spin in two-wheel drive.

The fix, step by step

  1. With the truck on stands, remove the hub cover bolts and pull the old hub body and inner drive gear.
  2. Clean the hub and spindle area, check the bearings while it's apart, and install the new hub with the gasket and hardware supplied.
  3. Test both positions by hand, then on a slippery surface.
  4. Offroad Design sells Yukon Hardcore hubs for 1978-and-older GM Dana 44s (19-spline).
  5. Confirm the spline count on yours first.
