Brace the steering box mount before the frame cracks

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 2–3 hoursCOST Parts plus a drill and basic hand tools

Symptoms

Steering that wanders or clunks, the steering box moving on the frame when someone saws at the wheel, or visible cracks around the box mounting bolts on a lifted or big-tire truck.

The fix, step by step

  1. Clean and inspect the frame rail around the box mounting area first, since a crack needs welding before a brace.
  2. Offroad Design's bolt-in brace for 1967–72 GM 4WD trucks triangulates the box mount to the crossmember and frame.
  3. It bolts on, but you have to drill one hole.
  4. Follow ORD's instructions, which note that some frames need washers to space the brace out.
  5. Re-torque everything after the first few drives.
