Repack front wheel bearings and replace spindle seals

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a dayCOST Bearing kits plus grease

Symptoms

Play at the top and bottom of the tire, a growl that changes as you turn, or grease and water inside the hub after deep water.

The fix, step by step

  1. Lift and support the front, then remove the wheel, the brake and the locking hub.
  2. Remove the spindle nuts and slide the hub off.
  3. Clean everything, inspect the races, and replace the bearings, races and hub seal as a set if anything is pitted.
  4. Pack the new bearings with grease, refit, set the preload per the shop manual and fit a new spindle seal while you're in there.
