Land Cruiser Prado 90 problems to check before you buy

  1. Ask when the lower ball joints were doneAustralia recalled a range of five-door Prados in May 2005 (PRA 2005/7749) because a scratched joint could wear and separate from the knuckle. AustralianCar.Reviews says joints still fail after the recall, and IH8MUD owners replace them preventively with genuine Toyota parts, because a joint can feel tight and still let go.
  2. Diesel: hunt for signs of overheatingOn the 1KZ-TE, overheating is how heads crack. Look for coolant bubbling into the overflow bottle, coolant loss or discoloration, and a gauge that climbs on hills or in traffic. Known causes include a tired viscous fan hub, a blocked radiator and a seized wastegate actuator. On a 260,000 km truck, one IH8MUD member's verdict was that 'the head on the 1kz has already been done', so ask for the receipt.
  3. Check the ATF for coolantThe automatic's oil cooler sits inside the engine radiator, so a crack lets coolant into the transmission. Pink, milky fluid on the dipstick is a deal-breaker, or at least a new radiator and a transmission rebuild.
  4. Rear axle flange recall (early trucks)Prados built from 17 April 1996 to 6 January 1999 were recalled in Australia (PRA 2006/8499) because the rear axle-shaft flange could crack after repeated hard driving on winding roads, and in the worst case let the wheel come off. A Japanese import won't have the paperwork, so inspect the flanges.
  5. Know which engine you're buyingThe model code tells you: VZJ = 3.4 V6, RZJ = 2.7 four, KZJ = 1KZ-TE diesel, KDJ = 1KD-FTV diesel (July 2000 on, Japan). '90' is the three-door, '95' the five-door. The V6 has a timing belt, and the 2.7 a chain.
  6. Timing belt historyHD Automotive gives the 1KZ-TE belt interval as 100,000 km or 5–6 years, and the 5VZ-FE V6 is a 90,000-mile belt. With no receipt, budget for the belt and water pump on day one.
  7. Import paperworkA US truck should come with proof that it was at least 25 years old on entry (the date runs from manufacture), the customs entry and the NHTSA HS-7 and EPA 3520-1 declarations. Check that your state will title and register it before you buy, especially California.
  8. Test the sub tank and CV bootsOn trucks with a sub tank, check that the switch-over works: AustralianCar.Reviews warns the mechanism can seize and the fuel go stale if it was never used. While you're underneath, look for split CV boots and grease on the inside of the front wheels.

The repairs Land Cruiser Prado 90 owners end up doing

REPAIRSYMPTOMSDIFFICULTYTIMECOST
Replace the front lower ball jointsHeavy steering, poor self-centring, vibration or shudder in turns, a torn boot, or simply no record that they've ever been changed. A worn joint can let go without warning.3 / 5≈ Half a day for both sidesParts only; buy genuine Toyota, as IH8MUD owners report early failures with cheap aftermarket joints
1KZ-TE timing belt and water pumpNo warning; it's on a schedule. HD Automotive quotes 100,000 km or 5–6 years, Roughtrax's UK sheet 60,000 miles or 60 months.2 / 5HD Automotive says labor is often quoted at around an hour for the beltHD Automotive's 1KZ belt kit lists at AUD $246; its 'major front service kit' adds the water pump and fan belts
Cooling-system overhaul on a 1KZ-TE (save the head)The temperature gauge climbs on hills, while towing or in hot traffic; coolant smells, or the level keeps dropping. AustralianCar.Reviews says overheating on this engine 'requires urgent attention' because it cracks heads.2 / 5≈ A day if you do the hoses and fan hub tooA Koyorad KZJ95 automatic radiator lists at AUD $379 at HD Automotive; one IH8MUD owner paid AUD $200 for a Koyo locally
Replace a cracked 1KZ-TE cylinder headBubbles or coolant pushing into the overflow bottle, coolant loss, rapid overheating, rough running and lost power. A pressure test may not show the crack.4 / 5≈ A weekend for a capable home mechanicParts plus a head; AustralianCar.Reviews recommends a genuine Toyota head because some non-genuine heads have had casting faults
5VZ-FE timing belt and water pump (V6 trucks)None until it snaps. The 5VZ-FE is non-interference, so a broken belt strands you but shouldn't bend valves. Plan on about 90,000 miles.4 / 5≈ 8–14 hours the first time (AdventureTaco, on the same engine in a Tacoma)Parts plus a long day
Rebuild the rear axle seals and bearingsGear oil on the inside of the rear wheel or brakes, a low diff level, or a clunk in reverse after the diff has run low.3 / 5≈ A day for both sidesSeals, bearings and retainers; Cruiser Outfitters sells a complete kit
Front pads and rotors, using 4Runner interchangePulsing pedal, grooved or thin rotors, squealing pads.2 / 5≈ 2 hoursPads and rotors; IH8MUD members source them in the US
Diagnose a sub tank that won't switchYou flick the sub-tank switch, the sub-tank light comes on, but the main-tank gauge keeps falling.2 / 5≈ 1–2 hours to diagnoseUsually one valve

Owner questions about Land Cruiser Prado 90 reliability

When is the timing belt due?

HD Automotive gives the 1KZ-TE belt as 100,000 km or 5–6 years (Roughtrax's UK schedule says 60,000 miles or 60 months). The 5VZ-FE V6 belt is about 90,000 miles, and that engine is non-interference. The 2.7 3RZ-FE has a timing chain.
