Fluids, capacities & service intervals
Any FJ25 is now more than 65 years old, so assume nothing has been done and service everything. Toyota's capacities below are for the F engine as fitted to the 40 and 55 Series (compiled on IH8MUD from Toyota publications). The FJ25's own gearbox and transfer case aren't in that table, so check its figures in an FJ25 manual.
| ITEM | SPEC / CAPACITY | INTERVAL | NOTES & PARTS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil & filter | F engine: 7 L, API SD in Toyota's table · canister (cartridge) filter element, Toyota 04152-60060 | Baseline now; then per the owner's manual | Early F engines use a canister filter, not a spin-on. An IH8MUD member says the dealer element comes with its gasket and washer. Use a modern oil suited to a flat-tappet engine.OEM canister (cartridge) oil filter, 1958–3/69 (026-01A) · Specter Off-Road ↗ |
| Ignition: plugs, points, condenser | Short-reach plugs (Champion J8C / NGK B6S / ND W14-U per the IH8MUD FJ25 list) · points gap 0.018 in (Cruiser Corps, 1958–75 F) | Baseline now | Set timing with the octane adjuster after replacing points. Check that the moving-body vacuum advance works.Points and condenser combo, 1958–75 · Cruiser Corps ↗Octane adjuster cover (022-38A) · Specter Off-Road ↗ |
| Valve lash | Adjustable rockers · clearances confirm in manual | Check now | Same procedure as an early FJ40 F engine. New cork cover gasket.Valve cover gasket, 1958–74 F · Cruiser Corps ↗ |
| Coolant, thermostat & hoses | F engine: 15.2 L (Toyota's early table lists plain water; use ethylene-glycol coolant) | Flush now | FJ25 hose part numbers on IH8MUD: upper 90916-01019, lower hoses 90916-01021, thermostat 90916-03014.Thermostat, OEM/Aisin (1958–92) · Cruiser Corps ↗Bypass hose, 1958–8/87 (054-15A) · Specter Off-Road ↗ |
| Fuel filter & pump | Metal-bowl filter with element (Toyota 04234-30010 per the IH8MUD FJ25 list) · mechanical pump | Replace element now | Old fuel varnishes carburetors. Clean the bowl and blow out the lines before rebuilding the carb.Fuel pump, 1958–78 F engine (confirm fit) · Cruiser Corps ↗ |
| Gearbox & transfer case | Gear oil per FJ25 manual confirm in manual (Toyota's 40-series table specifies API GL-4 SAE 90 for its gearboxes and transfer case) | Baseline now | The FJ25 has a single-speed transfer case and a different four-speed from the 40-series J30/H41, so don't borrow the 40-series capacities.FJ25 drivetrain parts (search) · Specter Off-Road ↗ |
| Front & rear differentials | Hypoid gear oil confirm in manual (Toyota's 40-series table: API GL-5 80W-90, 2.5 L) | Baseline now | The FJ25 has a centered rear differential. IH8MUD says its rear axle isn't the same as an FJ40's centered axle, so don't assume parts swap. |
