Valve adjustment and valve cover reseal

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hoursCOST Valve cover gasket about $17 (Cruiser Corps)

Symptoms

Ticking from the top end, oil weeping down the block, or poor running from tight valves.

The fix, step by step

  1. The F engine has adjustable rockers, and the procedure is the same as on an early FJ40.
  2. Warm the engine, find tight and loose valves with go/no-go feeler gauges, then shut it off and adjust cylinder by cylinder with the intake just closed.
  3. Use the clearances in your manual.
  4. Fit a new cork gasket: the IH8MUD FJ25 part list gives Toyota 11253-60010 for the original cover gasket.
