DIY repair · Toyota Land Cruiser J20 / J25 (FJ25)

Ignition tune-up (points, condenser, short-reach plugs)

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hoursCOST About $24 for a points and condenser combo (Cruiser Corps)

Symptoms

Hard starting, misfire or a rough idle on a truck that hasn't been tuned in years.

The fix, step by step

  1. Fit new points and condenser and set the gap.
  2. Cruiser Corps gives 0.018 in for its 1958–75 F-engine set.
  3. The FJ25 takes short-reach plugs: the IH8MUD FJ25 part list gives Champion J8C, NGK B6S or Nippondenso W14-U.
  4. Early distributors use a vacuum advance in which the whole distributor body moves.
  5. IH8MUD members found aftermarket Delco units on some trucks and advise against them.
  6. Replace the cap and rotor if they're cracked or tracked.
