Master cylinder rebuild (brake and clutch)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 3–4 hours including bleedingCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

A sinking pedal, fluid at the firewall, or a clutch that won't fully release.

The fix, step by step

  1. The FJ25's brake and clutch master cylinders are 1-inch-bore cast-iron units.
  2. Specter Off-Road lists its FJ25 kits (014-02-FJ25 brake, 018-02-FJ25 clutch) as discontinued, so look for cups of the same bore or have the bores sleeved by a specialist.
  3. Strip, hone and inspect the bore, fit new cups and seals, and check the cap.
  4. IH8MUD members found vented caps arrived on early-1960s trucks, and earlier caps may not be vented.
  5. Bleed both systems with fresh DOT 3.
