Jeep Wrangler JL problems to check before you buy
- Run the VIN for recalls before anything elseJL recalls include the 2018–2019 track-bar bracket weld (18V-675), the manual-clutch pressure plate (20V-124, 21V-028 and 23V-116), the 2018 transmission park-lock rod (18V-280) and cruise-control software (18V-332) campaigns, and the 2021–2025 power-steering pump wiring fire risk (26V-363). Make sure they've all been done.
- Feel the steering at highway speedVague, light or wandering steering on a 2018–2020 truck points to the early aluminum steering box (owners cite TSB 08-074-20). A shake after bumps points to the damper, track bar or worn front-end parts.
- Look at the track-bar weldsExtremeTerrain warns 2018 owners to be 'mindful of the track bar to body weld.' Check both track-bar brackets for cracks and the frame welds for poor penetration, which is what owners complained about to NHTSA.
- Manual trucks: clutch historyAsk whether the clutch recall was done, test for slip in a high gear at low revs, and smell for a cooked clutch after a short climb.
- Peek at the valley on a 3.6Oil weeping at the back of the engine, under the intake, means the oil cooler/filter housing is going.
- 2.0T: coolant level and plug receiptsCheck the coolant bottle and turbo lines for leaks, and ask for proof of the 30,000-mile spark plug changes the factory schedule calls for.
- eTorque: listen for start-stop faultsPickup Truck + SUV Talk lists early auxiliary-battery failures as a known JL issue, with flickering dash lights and random warnings.
- Decide whether you need the 2024 refreshThe 2024 update brought side-curtain airbags, the 12.3-inch screen and the full-float rear axle option. A 2018–2023 truck with its fixes done is the value buy.
The repairs Jeep Wrangler JL owners end up doing
| REPAIR | SYMPTOMS | DIFFICULTY | TIME | COST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fix steering wobble: damper, track bar, then the rest | Front-end shimmy or full death wobble after a bump at 45–65 mph, with the steering wheel shaking side to side. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 1–2 hours to inspect and fit a damper | Free damper replacement on affected early trucks under FCA's 2019 customer-satisfaction program; otherwise a damper or track bar |
| Replace a loose aluminum steering box (TSB 08-074-20) | Light, vague, loose steering and wandering on the highway, sometimes with play you can see at the pitman arm. One owner described it as 'super light, vague and loose' at nearly 100,000 miles. | 3 / 5 | ≈ 2–3 hours plus an alignment check | JLWranglerForums members report dealer quotes of $1,500+ out of warranty |
| Clutch: check the recall, then replace if it slips | Slipping under load, a burning smell, or a clutch-overheat warning after crawling. Recall 20V-124 covered manual Wranglers built from August 23, 2017 to February 13, 2020 because the pressure plate could overheat, fracture and, in the worst case, start a fire. | 4 / 5 | ≈ A long day (transmission out) | Recall work is free; an out-of-warranty clutch kit plus labor |
| Replace a leaking Pentastar oil cooler / filter housing | Oil, and sometimes coolant, pooling in the valley under the intake and running down the back of the engine. Pickup Truck + SUV Talk lists cracked Pentastar oil-filter housings and cooler adapters as a known JL issue. | 3 / 5 | ≈ 4–6 hours | Housing assembly plus gaskets, coolant and oil |
| Fix 2.0T coolant hose leaks | A dropping coolant level, a sweet smell, or crusty residue around the turbo coolant lines or the coolant bottle hoses on a 2.0 turbo. Pickup Truck + SUV Talk lists a TSB for turbo coolant return line leaks. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 1–2 hours | A Mopar hose and coolant |
| Replace a front hub and bearing | A speed-related growl, play when you rock the wheel top to bottom, or an ABS fault. Worn bearings are also on every death-wobble checklist. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 1–2 hours per side | A hub assembly per side |
| Press in new front ball joints | Clunks, wander, uneven tire wear, or movement when you rock a lifted wheel top to bottom. It's more common on lifted trucks with heavy tires. | 4 / 5 | ≈ A day for both sides | Ball-joint kit plus an alignment |

Years with known problems
| YEARS | FLAG | WHAT TO KNOW |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | Beware | JL launch (four-door production from November 2017, two-door from early 2018): 3.6 Pentastar with a 6-speed manual or 8-speed auto, plus a 2.0 turbo with eTorque (auto only). The year to be wary of: NHTSA recalls cover track-bar bracket welds (18V-675), the intermediate steering shaft weld (18V-343) and rear frame-rail corrosion (18V-231), manual trucks are in the clutch recalls, and SlashGear counts more than 1,000 owner complaints, mostly highway wander. Jeep Wrangler JL recalls and service bulletins
- Front track bar bracket welds (the 'frame weld' recall) ↗ 2018–2019 · NHTSA 18V-675Track bar brackets may be improperly welded and separate from the frame, reducing steering capability; dealers inspect and repair the welds.
- Intermediate steering shaft weld ↗ 2018 · NHTSA 18V-343The shaft may not have been properly welded and can split, so the wheel loses centre (recall U48).
- Rear underbody ladder rail corrosion ↗ 2018 · NHTSA 18V-231The rail can corrode, weakening the rear floor and loosening the left rear seat mount; dealers apply rust protection (recall U27, 106 vehicles).
- Steering column stub shaft ↗ 2019 · NHTSA 19V-201Improperly machined stub shafts can break and detach the steering wheel (recall V29).

- Clutch overheating software ↗ 2018–2021 · NHTSA 21V-028Expansion of the clutch pressure-plate overheating recall to 2018–2021 manual trucks.
- Clutch assembly replacement ↗ 2018–2023 · NHTSA 23V-116Further expansion to 2018–2023 manual trucks (pressure plate may overheat and fracture); 24V-572 re-flashes some 2021 trucks already remedied under it, because the new software could stall the engine.

- Steering-wheel shimmy after road irregularities ↗ · TSB 19-002-19November 2019 bulletin for 2018–2020 JL (and 2020 Gladiator) that points technicians to a diagnosis and repair video for the steering linkage and damper.

Owner questions about Jeep Wrangler JL reliability
Which years should I avoid?
2018, mainly. SlashGear counted 11 recalls and more than 1,000 owner complaints for the 2018 Wrangler, most about wandering at highway speed, and says steering complaints carried on, less often, for two more years. NHTSA's 2018 list includes track-bar bracket welds (18V-675, also 2019), the intermediate steering shaft (18V-343) and rear frame-rail corrosion (18V-231), and manual trucks from 2018 on are covered by the clutch recalls (20V-124, 21V-028, 23V-116). Quadratec says Jeep later moved from aluminum to cast-iron steering boxes. No later year is a write-off: buy any JL with its recalls and steering fixes documented.
