Jeep Wrangler JL years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Jeep Wrangler JL model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
2018, mainly. SlashGear counted 11 recalls and more than 1,000 owner complaints for the 2018 Wrangler, most about wandering at highway speed, and says steering complaints carried on, less often, for two more years. NHTSA's 2018 list includes track-bar bracket welds (18V-675, also 2019), the intermediate steering shaft (18V-343) and rear frame-rail corrosion (18V-231), and manual trucks from 2018 on are covered by the clutch recalls (20V-124, 21V-028, 23V-116). Quadratec says Jeep later moved from aluminum to cast-iron steering boxes. No later year is a write-off: buy any JL with its recalls and steering fixes documented.

Jeep Wrangler JL year by year
| YEAR | VERDICT | WHAT CHANGED |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | Beware | JL launch (four-door production from November 2017, two-door from early 2018): 3.6 Pentastar with a 6-speed manual or 8-speed auto, plus a 2.0 turbo with eTorque (auto only). The year to be wary of: NHTSA recalls cover track-bar bracket welds (18V-675), the intermediate steering shaft weld (18V-343) and rear frame-rail corrosion (18V-231), manual trucks are in the clutch recalls, and SlashGear counts more than 1,000 owner complaints, mostly highway wander. | 2020 | — | 3.0 EcoDiesel V6 (260 hp) arrives, four-door only; later subject to high-pressure fuel pump recalls |
| 2021 | — | Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid (375 hp, 21-mile EV range) and Rubicon 392 (6.4 Hemi, 470 hp), both four-door only. Xtreme Recon package (35s, 4.56 gears, 1.5 in lift) for the four-door Rubicon and 392; 4.88 axles optional on Rubicon. |
| 2023 | — | Lower-priced Willys 4xe; Rubicon 20th Anniversary edition |
| 2024 | — | Facelift: new grille (except Sport/Sport S), standard 12-inch Uconnect 5, new Rubicon X trim. Xtreme 35 package reaches the two-door. EcoDiesel dropped. Rubicon 392 'Final Edition'. |
| 2025 | — | Rubicon 392 continues, still badged 'Final Edition'; Stellantis drops the 4xe from the US market (Wikipedia) |
| 2026 | — | Moab 392 tops the range (four-door only); reworked door hinges for easier removal; 3.6 still offered with the manual; no 4xe in the US |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
What a Jeep Wrangler JL costs (October 2026)
Two-door JLs hold value well. Late Rubicons and factory-35 trucks sit near the top, while early Sports are the cheapest way into a JL.
| Early Sport / Sport S | $17k–27k |
|---|---|
| Driver Rubicon | $27k–36k |
| Late / low-mile Rubicon X or modified | $36k–50k |
Based on about 15 two-door JL sales on Bring a Trailer in 2025–26; a 2024 Rubicon X brought $46,000.
