Symptoms
Preventive. Owners suggest doing the transfer box at around 60,000 miles, along with the ZF gearbox and both differentials.
The fix, step by step
- Drain and refill the transfer box with about 2 litres of the fluid Land Rover specifies.
- Owners argue about cheaper alternatives, and one experienced member insists a generic transfer fluid is the wrong oil for the L460, so check the handbook rather than forum advice.
- One owner notes the front-axle disconnect clutch uses the same fluid as the active rear differential.
Tools & part numbers
- Sockets and drain plugs/washers
- fluid pump
- Land Rover-specified transfer fluid (≈ 2 L)
