Symptoms
A pad-wear warning (one owner's P440e needed rear pads at 31,000 miles, another owner's at 16,000), or grinding at the rear. NHTSA has several similar complaints from 2023–24 owners, with pads worn out at roughly 10,000–17,000 miles; one 2023 long-wheelbase owner says the dealer blamed the design and fitted a different pad.
The fix, step by step
- The rear calipers use an electric parking brake, so put the brake into service (maintenance) mode before you push the pistons back.
- Shops do this with a scan tool.
- With the truck supported and the wheels off, remove the caliper, swap the pads (one owner fitted genuine pads and found a single wear sensor), refit, then take the brake out of service mode and check it applies properly.
