DIY repair · Land Rover Range Rover L460

48 V to 12 V DC-DC converter

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME VariesCOST Specialist roughly £700–800 for the part plus about £400 to fit and program; dealers quoted £1,800–2,000 (owner reports)

Symptoms

'Stop – electrical fault detected' with a red battery light, the 12-volt battery not charging, and possibly loss of drive. Often no stored faults, and it may clear itself before coming back.

The fix, step by step

  1. Check first whether NHTSA recalls 26V248000 and 26V599000 (US) have been done.
  2. It adds a central software update to stop the converter overloading, and it's free.
  3. If the converter has already failed, it has to be replaced and then programmed to the vehicle, so use a dealer or a JLR specialist with the right software.
  4. Parts have been back-ordered, so plan on the truck being off the road for a while.
