Symptoms
Oil seeping around the oil filter housing, a hot-oil smell from the engine bay, or the oil level dropping between services. Land Rover recalled certain 2024 Range Rovers, plus some 2023–24 Defenders and 2024 Discoverys, Range Rover Sports and Velars, because the housing can crack and leak oil into the engine compartment, where it can catch fire on hot engine or exhaust parts.
The fix, step by step
- Run the VIN first.
- The recall remedy is a new filter housing, oil filter and O-rings, fitted free by a dealer (owner letters went out in June 2024).
- On a truck outside the recall that's leaking from the same place, the repair is the same: replace the housing with new O-rings and a new filter, following the workshop procedure for your engine, top up the oil and check for leaks at temperature.
- Clean any oil off the exhaust and undertrays afterwards.
Tools & part numbers
- Sockets and torque wrench
- drain pan
- new O-rings lubricated with clean oil
- brake cleaner and rags
