DIY repair · Mitsubishi Pajero / Montero (First Generation)

Rear drum brakes and wheel cylinders

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 2–3 hoursCOST Wheel cylinders, shoes and hardware

Symptoms

A spongy pedal, fluid on the inside of the rear tyre, or pulling under braking. US Raiders and Monteros on Bring a Trailer have front discs and rear drums, and one seller replaced the wheel cylinders along with the shocks and idler arm.

The fix, step by step

  1. Pull the drums and photograph the shoe and spring layout before you take anything apart.
  2. Replace the wheel cylinders, shoes and hardware on both sides, clean the backing plates, adjust the shoes, and bleed the brakes with DOT 3, the fluid AMSOIL lists for this truck.
