Fuel pump, filter and the 'won't stay running' fix

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–3 hoursCOST A pump, a filter and hose

Symptoms

Hard hot starts, stumbling or dying under load. Several Bring a Trailer sellers list a replaced fuel pump and filter in recent work on 2.6 Raiders and Monteros.

The fix, step by step

  1. Start by replacing the fuel filter and any perished rubber fuel hose, then check fuel delivery.
  2. If the original pump is weak, replace it with the correct part.
  3. TimmyTheGreaseMonkey has a video on converting a Dodge Raider or first-generation Montero to an electric fuel pump, and another on his 'must-have upgrades' for these trucks.
