Check the automatic locking hubs and part-time 4WD

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hours to check; longer to rebuild a hubCOST Free to check

Symptoms

4WD that won't engage or won't release. US trucks have automatically locking front hubs as standard. Mitsubishi says the first generation's part-time system binds ('tight-corner braking') if you use 4WD on dry pavement.

The fix, step by step

  1. On loose ground, shift into 4H and drive forward until the hubs engage, then try 4L.
  2. Shift back to 2H and reverse a few metres to release the auto hubs; Mitsubishi describes the old procedure of stopping and backing about a metre.
  3. If one side won't engage, pull the hub, clean it, check the internals, and regrease it with the correct hub grease.
  4. Never run 4WD on dry pavement in this truck.
