Three amigos: ABS sensors and hubs

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–3 hoursCOST A sensor, or a front hub assembly (about £160–260, per discovery2.co.uk)

Symptoms

ABS, TC and HDC warning lights on together, sometimes intermittently.

The fix, step by step

  1. Read the codes with a Nanocom, Hawkeye or similar to find the wheel.
  2. Clean the sensor and its tone ring, check the wiring and connector, and replace the sensor if needed.
  3. Play in a front wheel bearing can also trigger the lights; the front bearing is part of the hub assembly, and the hub nut is torqued to 490 Nm (360 lb-ft).
  4. If the codes point to the modulator, check for the 2004 NHTSA modulator-cover recall and change the brake fluid before replacing the unit.
