Rear chassis and crossmember repair

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME Several weekends, or a week on a rampCOST LandyZone members put a new chassis plus the work at close to £10,000; patch repairs much less

Symptoms

Flaking or holed metal at the rear crossmember, rear chassis legs and around the fuel tank; collapsed suspension hangers; MOT failures.

The fix, step by step

  1. Drop the fuel tank to see the real extent.
  2. Small holes can be plated, but most owners cut out the rear quarter or rear half and weld in a replacement section, or swap the whole frame for a galvanised one.
  3. Treat the inside of the rails with cavity wax afterwards, because that's where the rot starts.
