ACE leaks: pipes, filter or delete

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME Half a day to a weekendCOST Pipes are cheap; one owner's previous owner spent about $4,000 on the system

Symptoms

Hydraulic fluid on the chassis or around the anti-roll bars, ACE warning, body roll returning. Pipes rust through and the aluminium valve block pits until its seals fail.

The fix, step by step

  1. Trace the leak: pump banjo, steel lines along the chassis, actuator seals or the valve block.
  2. Replace corroded pipes with new Dowty washers (an NHTSA recall had dealers re-torque or replace the pump banjo bolt).
  3. Change the high-pressure filter in the bottom of the valve block at 72,000 miles: heat the steel cap, use a 10 mm hex, pull the filter straight out with an M6 bolt, refit at 35 Nm.
  4. Refill with Land Rover PAS fluid STC50519, which ACE shares with the steering.
  5. Owners who give up fit standard anti-roll bars and a non-ACE belt.
