EGR and intake clean

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME Half a day to a dayCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Sluggish response, smoke and DPF trouble. Unsealed 4X4 has seen diesel intake runners choked down to a hole the size of a 5-cent coin, and says the 2.8's EGR cooler likes to leak.

The fix, step by step

  1. Remove and clean the intake and EGR valve every 50,000–100,000 km or so, as Unsealed 4X4 suggests, and check the EGR cooler for coolant leaks while it's apart.
  2. Replace gaskets rather than reusing them.
