DPF regeneration problems (1GD-FTV)

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5 (diagnosis) – 4 / 5 (replacement)TIME From a highway drive to a dealer visitCOST Toyota's 2020 remedy is free of charge. Unsealed 4X4 puts a replacement system at 'at least a couple grand'.

Symptoms

Heavy white smoke, a foul smell, DPF warnings, limp mode and higher fuel use, mostly on trucks that only do short trips.

The fix, step by step

  1. First confirm the free Toyota repair (revised exhaust hardware and software, available since May 2020) has been done.
  2. Use the manual regeneration switch, standard from June 2018, and drive at sustained highway speed regularly.
  3. Unsealed 4X4 also suggests asking for a manual regen at each service on short-trip trucks.
  4. Deleting the DPF is illegal.
