Symptoms
The green 4WD light stays on after you switch 4WD off, the front driveshaft won't turn by hand with the switch off, or the truck won't shift in or out of 4WD.
The fix, step by step
- On the FJ62's push-button system, vacuum solenoid valves (VSVs) on the passenger-side firewall send vacuum to the transfer-case actuator.
- With the switch off and the truck in neutral on the parking brake, check for vacuum at each side of the solenoid.
- IH8MUD owners trace most cases to a burnt-out solenoid, but others found a clogged vacuum line or one corroded at a bracket, so check the lines and the actuator diaphragm before buying parts.
- One owner's interim fix is to pull a vacuum line and apply vacuum to the correct port by hand to get it out of 4WD.
- Don't swap the two lines: one engages 4WD and the other releases it.
- Replace the solenoid, or follow the IH8MUD write-ups that adapt a junkyard Toyota VSV or a MAC valve.
