Chase down a rough idle

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–3 hoursCOST Hoses and tune-up parts

Symptoms

Rough or hunting idle, hesitation, or a hiss under the hood.

The fix, step by step

  1. Start with a tune-up: plugs, cap, rotor and wires.
  2. Then check every vacuum hose, since IH8MUD members point to vacuum leaks as the most likely cause on the 3F-E.
  3. Replace hard or cracked hoses rather than patching them, and recheck the idle once warm.
  4. Trucks over 200,000 miles will probably need a full set of vacuum hoses.
