Symptoms
Fuel smell, or fuel dripping near the rear axle, especially when filling. NHTSA owner complaints describe a tank split at a spot weld and a corroded fuel line in the left rear wheel well.
The fix, step by step
- NHTSA campaign 91V-110 covers 1980–1990 Land Cruisers, including every FJ62 year: heat and load can pressurize the tank and crack the welds that hold its internal separator, and Toyota's remedy was a new, improved tank.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and ask a Toyota dealer whether the work was ever done; several owners told NHTSA the parts weren't available when they tried.
- If you're replacing it yourself, drain the tank, support it on a jack, disconnect the filler hose, lines and sending unit, and drop it.
- While it's down, replace the rubber filler hose and grommets and inspect the steel fuel lines, which can corrode through.
