Diagnose oil leaks before pulling the transmission

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hours to diagnoseCOST Gaskets; a rear main seal job is far more

Symptoms

Oil drips at the bellhousing or under the engine.

The fix, step by step

  1. Clean the engine, then drive and look again.
  2. IH8MUD members point out that a leak near the rear main is often just oil pan bolts not tightened to spec, or a valve cover gasket running down the back of the block.
  3. Torque the pan bolts and replace the valve cover gasket before committing to a rear main seal, which means removing the transmission.
