ATF drain-and-fill

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 2–3 hoursCOST Fluid (one owner estimated about 12 qt for a full exchange)

Symptoms

Rough or erratic shifts on a truck with 'lifetime' fluid, or towing and hard off-road use.

The fix, step by step

  1. The 10-speed uses thin Toyota WS fluid and has a strainer, not a serviceable filter.
  2. An IH8MUD member argues that the lifetime-fill recommendation lets wear metals build up in the valve body.
  3. Owners do a drain-and-fill or a staged exchange with WS or a WS-compatible fluid, then set the level with the factory temperature-based check procedure.
  4. If you don't have the procedure and a scan tool to read fluid temperature, have a shop do it.

Tools & part numbers

  • Socket set
  • fluid pump
  • scan tool (Techstream or similar) to read ATF temperature
  • Toyota WS or a WS-compatible fluid
  • service manual.
