Steering linkage rebuild: tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm and support

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a day plus an alignmentCOST About $400 in parts for one owner's front end, not including shocks

Symptoms

Wander, a steering wheel that won't center, clunks over bumps and uneven tire wear. Lifted trucks and cranked torsion bars make it worse: one owner says parts wore out 'five times faster'.

The fix, step by step

  1. Separate the tie-rod ends, pitman arm and idler arm with a puller, count the turns on the tie-rod sleeves to keep a rough toe setting, and replace the worn parts.
  2. Owners recommend heavier tie rods and an idler and pitman support kit if you run 37s.
  3. Grease every fitting afterwards.
  4. The idler support's fitting can't be reached without removing it, so a grease-relocation kit helps.
  5. Get the truck aligned.
