Transfer case actuator motor

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 2 hours (estimate)COST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Low range won't select or deselect, a warning on the dash, or the shift sits half-done. Handsome Motors flags transfer case motors and actuators as a weak spot on 2002–04 trucks.

The fix, step by step

  1. Confirm the fault with a diagnostic scan, then unbolt the actuator motor from the transfer case, fit the new unit, then clear the codes and test the range shift with a scan tool.
  2. Service the transfer case fluid at the same time, because specialists note owners tend to put it off.
