Propshafts: grease, flex discs, judder

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME 1–3 hoursCOST Grease is cheap; Autocar budgets £1,500+ for a replacement shaft

Symptoms

Vibration or judder at speed, clunks on take-up, cracked rubber flex discs, notchy U-joints.

The fix, step by step

  1. Grease the propshaft joints and slip yokes at every service; G-luxe Travel has a quick W463 guide.
  2. Inspect the flex discs (guibos) and the centre support bearing.
  3. Replace flex discs in pairs if either looks marginal, and recheck the bolt torque after a few hundred miles.
  4. A shaft that still judders after that needs rebuilding or replacing.
