Cracked coil springs (front and rear)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME 1–2 hours per axle (estimate)COST ≈ £120 per corner (Autocar)

Symptoms

A loud thump over bumps, a corner sitting low, a visibly broken coil, often after a cold snap.

The fix, step by step

  1. Support the chassis on stands and take the axle on a jack.
  2. Disconnect the shock and sway-bar link on that side, then lower the axle slowly until the spring comes free, watching the brake hoses, ABS wires and locker lines.
  3. Fit the new spring with its isolator, raise the axle, and refit the shock and link.
  4. Replace springs in axle pairs.
