DIY repair · Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon (L300 4WD)

Valve cover gasket and half-moon seal

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 30–60 minutesCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Oil weeping down the back of the engine, oily smell in the cab and a damp underside. The factory rubber half-moon seal at the back of the head shrinks and hardens.

The fix, step by step

  1. Lift the seats and engine cover.
  2. One owner says you don't need to remove the fan shroud or timing cover: undo the two 12 mm bolts, three hoses and two plugs, then roll the cover off over the valve gear.
  3. Clean both surfaces thoroughly.
  4. Delica.ca's Growlerbearnz fits the alloy half-moon seal (Mitsubishi MD372348) with grey high-strength silicone, and says red or black silicone is too soft.
  5. Don't put silicone between the cover and its gasket.

Tools & part numbers
