Find and seal footwell water leaks

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME A weekendCOST Sealant and time

Symptoms

Wet carpets, a 'wet dog' smell and rust starting under the front mats.

The fix, step by step

  1. Work through Delica.ca's complete leak guide, worst offender first.
  2. Remove the front quarter panels above the headlamps, dig out the cracked seam sealer, paint and reseal: that fixed about 80% of one owner's leaks.
  3. Then check the windscreen seal and the rust-prone screen flange, the antenna base, the roof-gutter seams (reseal with an adhesive seam sealer after removing the trim), the washer-jet stalks and the wiper spindles.
  4. If the floor still gets wet, look underneath: another owner found the floor pan and a seat-mount bolt rusted through.
